Knowledge and Wisdom

Health is a Choice

If you had a choice between Knowledge and Wisdom, which would you choose? The accumulation of knowledge is often associated with a person’s intelligence, yet in the absence of wisdom relevant to how to apply that knowledge, said knowledge has limited or no value.

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.

Knowledge and Wisdom

Doctors knew about my various health issues and what caused them and prescribed medication to treat the symptoms, not the actual problem. Prescription medications are not a cure; they are the solution for a person looking for an easy fix.

We accept that, without question, doctors have the training and knowledge to diagnose and treat our symptoms. I know this to be true because I allowed my doctors to prescribe sixteen different medications to treat my various medical issues.

Wisdom was reaching a point where I knew I needed to change my lifestyle habits and find a doctor to look at my health issues holistically. This shift in approach filled me with hope and optimism, as I knew I was on the right path to reclaiming my health.

Part of that journey has required me to understand my medical issues better and find ways to improve my physical and mental health. I significantly changed my diet, exercise routine, and stress management practices.

An example of my commitment to understanding and managing my health was the creation of an Excel spreadsheet that included all of my blood test results dating back to 02/01/2000.

Understanding normal kidney function for (eGFR) is (>59) and that my blood test results on 31/10/2018 were 39 placed me in stage 3b kidney disease, and a small jump away from kidney failure was the catalyst for changing doctors and finding a better treatment than prescription medication.

My test results for (eGFR) on 01/10/2024 were 62, while my prescription medication has reduced from 16 to 5. While my kidneys will never return to 100% functionality, the risk of kidney failure, needing dialysis or kidney replacement has been averted. This knowledge brings me a sense of relief and peace of mind, knowing that I have taken steps to avoid potential health crises.

I no longer trust my doctor solely with my health. Instead, I have partnered with her to ensure the quality of my life remains as high as possible. This shift in perspective has empowered me to take an active role in my health management, and wisdom will ensure that happens.

In my next Post, I will cover ” Reclaim Your Health.”
